Venice's other islands

Murano, Burano and the Lido

While most visitors spend their time in the main historic center of Venice, there are other islands worth a day trip.  These offer a similar experience, but with a more local feel and fewer tourists.

Murano

Murano is the closest and largest of the islands near Venice.  It can be reached by vaporettos # 12, 13, 41, 42, 71 and 72.   The island has about 6000 citizens and 70 glass factories.  Glass making was moved here from Venice in 1291 because of the threat of fire.  Today you can visit the factories and stores, a glass museum, and watch glassblowing.  Some people think that Murano is rather industrial, while others believe they get the real feel of people living and working on the islands.

If you are only interested in glass blowing, you can find demonstrations in several shops near St. Mark's Square.  As you face St. Marks Basilica walk left alongside the building and follow straight ahead for about 200 yards.  You can purchase authentic Venetian glass all over the city.

Burano

This island can be reached by vaporetto #12.  The journey takes about a half an hour.  The island, once a famous fishing village, is now famous for lace making.  There are many shops where you can purchase lace and a museum showing some amazing creations.  The island is also famous for its bright colored houses ranging from purple to mustard.  Another point of interest is the campanile (bell tower) with its gravity defying tilt.   From some views you would swear that it is going to fall today.

Lido

The Lido can be reached by taking vaporettos # 1, 6, 14, 41, 42, 62, or 82.  This area is the stretch of sand that protects the lagoon from the open sea.  It is here where the Venetians go to enjoy the beach.  The Lido is famous for its early 1900's hotels and the Casino.  Today most people come here to enjoy an elaborate evening of fine dining and try their luck in the very elegant casino.  You can rent bikes near the vaporetto stop to explore the island.
