Sights in Lübeck

Lübeck, Germany

Lübeck, located in Northern Germany, is the gateway to Scandinavia and the Baltics.  Lübeck is also near the seaside resort of Travemünde.  The city has a great past as a free Imperial and Hanseatic town.  Its old town showcases the impressive medieval redbrick gothic architecture.  The Patrician town houses and Gothic churches are now included on UNESCO’s list of world heritage sites and were also the setting of Thomas Mann’s “Buddenbrucks.”  The old town offers 1000 years of history.  Today Lübeck is also a modern port and trade city with the East.

Lübeck is a city of interest that not only has art and culture, history and museums, but is also loved by young people for its nightlife (bars, discos, clubs…).

Sights of Lübeck

The Holsten Gate (das Holstentor): The big double tower from the 15th century is the most famous city gate in Germany from the late medieval times.  It was built between 1464 and 1478 by Hinrich Helmstede.

Buddenbrooks House (Buddenbrookhaus): A very interesting exhibition on the life and works of Heinrich Mann and his brother, Thomas Mann.

Art Galleries: There are many varied art galleries throughout the city.  For example the impressive art of St. Anne’s and the ecclesiastical art collection of the Behnhaus and Drägerhaus museums.  Also, you can learn about the history of marzipan at the Marzipansalon.

Excursions: The Baltic seaside resort of Travemünde has nice sandy beaches and a perfect resort atmosphere.  There are a number of cruise and passenger ships for families to enjoy.  We recommended a visit to the Hansapark theme park in Sierksdorf on the Baltic coast.

Not only are there numerous hidden courtyards and terraces with cafes and bistros to discover, but there is also a lovely path along the River Wakenitz.
