Wine Route - Côteaux d' Aix-en-Provence - Les Baux

While there are over 15 different wine routes in the whole of Provence, the Côteaux d'Aix en Provence - Les Baux is located in one of the most beautiful areas of the region and one of our favorites.  The wine route runs along beautiful Plane Tree lined roads from St Rémy to Arles, with Les Baux at the center of the route.

The Les Alpilles limestone mountain range cuts right through the region.  The surrounding soil is very rich and combined with the dry climate makes it an ideal location for growing grapes, olives and almonds.  The ancient Romans settled at nearby Glanum because this soils fertile nature.  In 1985 the region became an appellation (the highest quality of wines) for red and rosé wines.  The name of the appellation is Les Baux-de-Provence.

Of the wines produced in the region, 60% are deep reds which are considered best 5-6 years after bottling.  Another 30% are rosés which are best enjoyed shortly after bottling.  Finally, white wine accounts for 10% of the wine produced here.  For more about general wine and wine tasting in France, please click on the links.

Wine Cellars

Sarragan Wine Cellars is built in a former Roman quarry.  There is a large bar for free tastings and a gift shop.  The cellars are open daily to the public for visits and tastings from 10:00 - 12:00 and 2:00 - 7:00.  Closes at 6:00 in the winter.

Château Romanin Wine Cellar is hewn out of the Alpilles mountain and has an almost cathedral like quality.  Guided visits and wine tastings are available by appointment.  Walking trails though the vineyards are also available.  Open weekdays from 9:00 -1:00 and 2:30 - 6:30 and weekends from 11:00 - 7:00.  Closed Sundays during winter months.

Vineyard Estate Homes

Château d'Estoublon Mogador is a 15th century building, rebuilt in the 18th century after destruction during the Wars of Religion.  This large estate home is set among the vineyards and olive trees of Fontvieille near Les Baux.  The estate offers wine and olive oil tastings as well as a large gift boutique featuring beautifully selected regionally produced gifts.  Open daily in high season from 9:00 - 7:00, except weekends when it closes from 1:00 - 2:00 for lunch.  During low season, from mid-September to mid April, it closes for lunch on weekdays and is not open at all on weekends.

Mas de la Dame is a 17th century country house that sits at the foot of Les Baux.  The house and its vineyards and olive groves were painted by Van Gogh in 1889.  Available for sale are wines, olive oil and tapenade.  Open daily from 8:30 - 7:30.
